“The Ultimate Chocolate Affaire”
CHANDLER—You generally don’t find the words “Valentine’s Day,” “chocolate” and “free” in the same sentence, much less the same location. But Hope Covenant Church, the south Chandler congregation known for its “No Perfect People Allowed” sign out front, has changed all of that for modern-day Romeos and Juliets.
The church, located on Dobson Road just north of Germann Road, came up with a sinfully sweet occasion seven years ago that quickly became a romantic tradition. “The Ultimate Chocolate Affaire” bills itself as the “largest and best chocolate bar in Chandler,” and no one has contested the claim. From 6pm to 9pm on Friday, February 12, the church will serve an array of confections in a coffeehouse type of setting, and it doesn’t cost guests a thing.
“This is our Valentine’s gift to the community,” says organizer Sheri Cross, the wife of the church’s senior pastor, Duane Cross. “It was adapted from an idea I once had to get women to turn out for a meeting: bring chocolate.
“Chocolate goes with Valentine’s Day, so we thought we’d stake a claim to serving the largest chocolate buffet in Chandler.”
Hope recruits nearly three dozen volunteers to prepare the goodies and put on the event, which will include music coordinated by the church’s worship pastor, Scott Tonkinson. Sugar-free treats also will be available.
“We love doing this for our community, and the only strings attached are our heartstrings,” Sheri Cross says.
Hope Covenant Church is at 1770 S. Dobson Road in Chandler. For more information on the “The Ultimate Chocolate Affaire,” call the church at (480) 899-7255 or go to www.hopeispossible.org/chocolate.
