Week of August 1, 2010

Happy Monday!  Hope you are having a great start to your week.

Some of you were interested in having a copy of the version of Psalm 23 that Heather read during my sermon on Sunday.  Here it is:

PSALM 23 (“American Life” Translation)

The clock is my dictator, I shall not rest.

It makes me lie down only when exhausted, it leads me to deep depression, it hounds my soul.

It leads me in circles of frenzy for activity's sake.

Even though I run frantically from task to task, I will never get it all done, for my ideal is with me.

Deadlines and my need for approval — they drive me.

They demand my performance from me beyond the limits of my schedule.

They anoint my head with migraines, my in-basket overflows.

Surely fatigue and time pressure shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the bonds of frustration forever.

Did you know?

It’s been a while since we shared some of the things going on in the lives of the church family at Hope.  So here are some of those:

  • Pastor Duane is on vacation with Sheri, celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.  They are on an Alaskan cruise!  Nice…

  • Brian & Kelly Smith on Saturday were blessed with baby Caleb Andrew, 8 lbs. 12 oz., 21 inches.  Congrats to you both!

  • One of the bulletin boards in our children’s hallway at church has been decorated by Navajo children from the Vacation Bible School our team held on the Navajo Nation in June!  Be sure to check it out.  They each drew pictures representing how you can pray for them in the weeks ahead.  We had another great weeklong mission trip up there at that time.  So far we have had more than 100 different people from Hope go up to serve, many with stories that are best told in person.

  • We have several people who have just moved or are moving out of state.  Those who have already moved include Gary & Rita Young, who moved to Nebraska; and Chad & Kimberly Bassett, who moved to Montana.  Those soon to move include Elizabeth Fritz, moving to Idaho; and Hannah Cary, also moving to Idaho for school.

  • Thu Tran, our children’s pastor, will be leaving us in September.  She and her husband Daniel are moving to Iowa to be closer to his family for a couple of years, while Thu goes back to school and they both prepare for moving overseas to Vietnam.  Thu hopes to get an ESL degree that she can use to teach in Vietnam.

  • Yvonne DeVaughn did a presentation at the national women’s Triennial, just held in Washington, D.C. The presentation was centered around Advocacy for Victims of Abuse.

  • Our “TLC” landscaping team, which was started and has been led by Jim Selland since it started in 2007, has saved our church over $30,000 in landscaping expenses!  Thanks to all of you who have selflessly served on these teams over the last couple of years.  Due to health issues, Jim will be stepping down from leading this team on Sep. 1.  Lots of help will be needed to try to fill his shoes!

  • As things need to be fixed at the church, oftentimes Mike Wolfe, Carl Gore or Mark Mueller have donated their time and expertise to make the necessary repairs.  Most of us don't even know when things get broken, but we're so grateful for people like this who give of their time.

  • Our lead secretary, Pat Bahle, just celebrated 3 years of serving with us in our church office.  Please call or email her and express your gratitude that she is with us!  She and Susan alleviate a tremendous load off our shoulders each week, we couldn’t do it without them!

  • Rene McCumber is returning to India on a short-term team in October.  Rene went on Hope’s short-term mission trip to India in 2008 and is ready to go back and further explore whether she can make the transition to serving there full-time.  On Aug. 29 there will be a benefit dinner after second service, with proceeds going toward helping her trip.

  • J.R. Mahala is back home from his months serving in Kosovo.  His wife Rebecca was recently able to secure a job as a special education teacher in Mesa, that she calls a "heavenly match".

  • Former Hope pastor Jonathan Wilson and his wife Amy welcomed baby Holly into the world a couple of weeks ago. 8 lbs. 1 oz., 20.5 inches!

  • The Marich family at Hope is needing some help with some household items as they struggle to get back on their feet.  If you can help donate a new or gently used item or two, please check the list of remaining items needed.
