When it comes to marriage a major question that needs to be asked often is "Got communication?" If not, or even if you think you do, consider the possibility that things could be even better. After all, as our sign makes clear, and as we all readily admit, we're not perfect, which means it's really hard for two imperfect people to make a perfect marriage. In fact, without God and His word, it's impossible!
When our pastor first approached us about attending a "Weekend to Remember" marriage conference, my first thought (excuse) was that we just didn't have time. With three kids being home schooled and one in high school it was all we could do to sneak out for maybe a couple of hours on Friday night once in a while. There was just no way we could escape for a weekend. But he kept after us. "You can't afford not to do this", he would say. "It will make a huge positive difference in how you communicate with each other and with your kids. Some improvement is practically guaranteed and miracles have happened. At worst it would be a weekend with just each other, and all couples, especially parents, deserve an occasional getaway." Okay, I said. "We'll see if we can arrange it".
So - we did. And our first weekend to remember was indeed memorable. We did spend too much time talking about the kids instead of each other but it was still worth every penny.
Our second conference, a couple of years later was much more fruitful. We finally got around to talking about us and fighting the urge to center on the kids again. We were able to focus on our relationship and it made a big difference. I can't say there were "big breakthroughs" but we discovered some things about ourselves and each other that have helped us through some difficult times.
Besides, it was a great, intimate time and we're looking forward to another "Weekend to Remember".
