Psalm 23: In God We Trust
for “Wonderful Words of Life” series at
Psalm 23 (New Living Translation):
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.
2 He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams.
3 He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.
4 Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.
5 You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings.
6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.
We can trust in God as our shepherd, because:
1. The Shepherd provides (verses 1-3a)
- He provides the RIGHT “stuff” (verse 1)
- He provides all the time you need to be renewed (verses 2-3a)
- “Only someone too stupid to find his way home would wear himself out with work!” — Ecclesiastes 10:15 (GNT)
2. The Shepherd guides and protects (verses 3b-4)
- The paths, including the valleys, He leads us on are to grow us and make us more Christlike (I Thessalonians 4:7, 5:23)
- God doesn’t spare any of us the valleys, and each valley has a purpose (Romans 8:28-29)
- The valleys are temporary (1 Peter 1:6, 2 Corinthians 4:17)
- Rather than focusing on the valley, we should focus on Christ (Hebrews 12:2)
3. The Shepherd blesses (verses 5-6)
How do you respond to the dark valleys of life?
- Become angry and disappointed with God
- Try to take control of the situation on your own
- Look for other ways out of the valley (comforts, addictions)
- Focus on the problems, respond with anxiety and fear
- Trust in God, and keep walking through the valley
Do you fully trust the Shepherd?
